Trump Demands Jailing of Chicago Mayor and State Executive as National Guard Arrive in Metropolis

Former President Donald Trump on midweek called for the incarceration of Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, accusing them of not safeguarding federal immigration officers.

"The city's leader should be jailed for failing to secure Immigration agents!" Trump posted on his platform early Wednesday. "Governor Pritzker as well!"

Both officials identify as the Democratic faction.

These remarks coincide with the deployment of state military troops in the Windy City area following directives from the current government, despite strong objections from Illinois authorities including Pritzker and Johnson.

"This marks not the first instance where Trump attempted to have a Black man wrongfully arrested," Mayor Johnson stated on that day. "I am staying put."

The governor responded via social platforms, stating: "I refuse to back down. Trump is now demanding arrests of elected officials resisting his authority. What remains on the road toward complete authoritarianism?"

As of midweek, military troops from the Lone Star State had reached the Elwood training facility, an army base approximately 80 kilometers from the city, as the administration pushes forward with its aggressive crime strategy and mass deportation efforts.

The president has labeled Chicago a "dangerous disaster zone", even though police data indicate significant drops in many offenses, including homicides.

That day, 200 Texas National Guard members were expected to deploy to the Chicago area, with an additional three hundred Illinois guard forces preparing to mobilize, according to sources. Authorities reportedly stated the troops would avoid law enforcement duties but would secure federal immigration agents and government buildings.

Military personnel wearing uniforms with state guard patches were spotted at the US army reserve center in Elwood. Vehicles marked "Disaster Relief" dropped off sanitation facilities and essential items. Trailers were arranged in rows. Extra barriers was installed around the perimeter.

The Federal Aviation Administration imposed no-fly zones over the army reserve center for security reasons until 6 December.

Federal authorities has intensified deportation operations in the city in the past month, triggering demonstrations, particularly near an processing facility in Broadview.

On Monday, Illinois and Chicago initiated legal action against the administration, attempting to halt the National Guard deployment, urging a federal judge to stop what they call "the president's proclaimed 'Battle'" on the city and state, labeling it "illegal and risky".

A court hearing on their lawsuit is scheduled for the next day.

The mayor also issued an directive on Monday banning ICE officers and related personnel from using municipal facilities as operation bases for enforcement actions.

Pritzker has charged the president of using troops as "staged tools" and "chess pieces".

At a news conference on the previous day, he said that the president is trying to "rationalize and normalize the presence of military personnel under his direct command."

The historic federal law restricts the army's involvement in civilian law enforcement. Yet, Trump has stated he would be prepared to activate the Insurrection Act, which permits a commander-in-chief to send active duty military in states that are failing to put down an uprising or are defying federal law.

After beginning his new administration, Trump has dispatched or discussed sending military units to at least 10 cities, including Baltimore; Washington DC; New Orleans and West Coast locations like Oakland, San Francisco and Los Angeles, arguing that the military presence is essential to fight violence and protect ICE officers.

Statistics indicates that serious offenses nationwide has declined in the past few years. In the city, for instance, murders were down 31% to under three hundred through August, per police data.

New survey data released on Wednesday revealed that the majority of US citizens oppose the deployment of troops without an external threat.
