Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The one-time leader was convicted of plotting a government overthrow in September and sentenced more than over two decades in incarceration, but he was staying under confinement pending legal challenges.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" came to light.

This encompassed seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a call for a public vigil that could facilitate a chance to flee".

Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns

In a document approving the detention, the judge said intelligence from the unit overseeing Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's aim to disable the tracking monitor to ensure success in his escape.

This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the gathering called by his offspring.

His offspring, Flávio, who serves as a senator, called for a gathering of his followers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday evening.

The senator wrote on digital networks on last Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your nation, or see it all from your mobile device there on your couch? I call on you to fight with us."

He said the gathering would be so supporters could "pray for his well-being and for the restoration of democratic rule in our nation."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of Justice Moraes's determination was the possibility of the former president's "relocation to embassies near the home, considering that the investigations revealed a history of planning to request asylum through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.

The judicial paperwork emphasizes that the American diplomatic mission in the capital, Brazil's capital, is situated around 8 miles from his dwelling.

International Reactions

His judicial problems have provoked anger from fellow populist conservative United States President President Trump, causing him to impose a 50% tariff on imports of Brazilian goods.

He is being detained in a national police facility in Brazil's capital city and will experience a custody hearing on Sunday.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on last Friday that the his legal team asked the High Court to permit him to fulfill his full incarceration period under home confinement, with tracking devices.

They also asked that he be permitted to depart his residence for healthcare, saying he needed ongoing care for lung conditions and other health problems.

Background on Conviction

The former president was determined responsible of heading a plot aimed at keeping him in power after he failed to win the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, President Lula.

High Court judges said that he was aware of a plot which included plans to murder Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to imprison and murder the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been overseeing the former president's case.

The conspiracy was stopped because it couldn't obtain the support of the military leaders. Lula was sworn in without problem on 1 January 2023.

But a following week, on January 8th, many Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised official structures in the federal district, Brazil's capital.

The law enforcement intervened and around 1,500 people were arrested.

The judges found that the protesters had been incited by the former president whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to step in, bring back stability and bring him back to power.

At the moment, his attorneys called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.

He was also banned from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The former president called the legal proceedings a "witch hunt and said it was designed to prevent him running in the next presidential race.
