The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US on five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.
The bans were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
